Developing sporting potential does not have to come with a lack of education. To avoid it, Paris Saint-Germain Academy UK builds a network of football and education pathways. Another element of this construction is the newly started partnership with Ellesmere College – one of the country’s leading independent schools.
Through partnerships with schools, colleges and football clubs across the UK, PSG Academy creates a whole structure of combining football development with formal education. The programmes are designed to support young players not only in improving their sport abilities, but also in developing the skills and knowledge for life beyond the pitch.
One of the examples is the partnership with Ellesmere College, starting right now – in September. According to its plan, student-athletes combine daily structured football training with their academic timetable. The coaching scheme is based on the Paris Saint-Germain methodology. The programme focuses on physical development, technical progression, tactical awareness and competitive experience. It also includes strong emphasis on academic achievement.
Similar cases are already developed through other PSG Academy UK hubs. For example – at Lord Grey Academy, sixth grade students can combine PSG Academy football with A-level studies. At Moreton School, players can study any subject while participating in elite football training. There are also another opportunities including work experience, business workshops and FA coaching and refereeing courses.
The pathway also extends beyond traditional school education. At Coleg Cambria, players aged 16–19 can combine football training with full-time further education – including BTECs, “A” Levels and sports-related diplomas.
These programmes are particularly relevant from a dual career perspective. The PSG Academy UK model demonstrates how football organisations can help young athletes keep different pathways open. Not every player will build a long-term professional career on the pitch. Access to education and additional experiences alongside football can prepare young people for different opportunities in the future.
